Android Auto Is Changing In A Big Way
If you’re bummed because Android Auto doesn’t work with your current car, know that things are about to change. Google revealed recently that Android Auto will soon be able to work even if a vehicle doesn’t have a compatible infotainment system.
The genius of this new move is that you could literally be driving a Ford Model T and still be using Android Auto. Basically, the system will be like a standalone app on an Android smartphone. Activating the app puts the phone in a simplified car mode, which looks a lot like what’s shown on infotainment screens in Android Auto compatible vehicles.
This workaround will be a solution to Toyota refusing to incorporate Android Auto or Apple CarPlay in its vehicles. This is bad news for Apple CarPlay. No doubt, this will be yet another reason for some people to consider an Android device, because they can use it with any car.
Another change for Android Auto involves wireless connectivity. Instead of the phone needing to be plugged into the car, the tech can work through a WiFi connection, if the vehicle has a mobile hotspot. It’s another way to declutter the interior, which everyone should be excited about.
By the end of 2016, you won’t be forced to use Google Maps on Android Auto. The tech giant is actually going to include the Waze app in the interface.
