The BMW M235i Coupe is a great machine, but we all knew it was just keeping the throne warm while BMW worked on the true king of the 2 Series lineup. Well, the king has finally arrived, as BMW has officially revealed the all-new 2016 M2.

At the heart of the 2016 BMW M2 is a 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline six-cylinder engine that produces a mighty 365 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 343 pound-feet of torque between 1,400 and 5,560 rpm. This engine also has an overboost function that pushes the torque to 369 pound-feet for a brief period of time.

The engine pairs up with either a standard rev-matching six-speed manual transmission or the optional M Double Clutch Transmission. With the former installed, the M2 can hit 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, while the latter rockets the coupe to highway speeds in just 4.2 seconds. The M2’s top speed is set at 155 mph. This makes the M2 0.4 seconds quicker to 60 mph and 25 mph faster than the M235i.

Like its big brothers, the M3 and M4, the M2 has an advanced chassis to keep it on point in the corners. The front end features struts, an anti-roll bar, control arms, wheel carriers, axle subframes, and stiffening plates all crafted from aluminum. The rear suspension uses the same lightweight material to craft the five-link rear axle system, as well as no rubber bushings like its M3 and M4 brethren. The M2 also gains 19-inch forged wheels wrapped up in 245/35 rubber up front and 265/35 tires out back.

On the outside, the M2 has all of the typical styling cues we’d expect from any M model, including gills just behind the front wheels, a stylish front apron and splitter, an aggressive rear diffuser, flared wheel arches, and high-gloss chrome tailpipes. Buyers can choose from four color for the M2, including Long Beach Blue metallic, Alpine White, Black Sapphire metallic and Mineral Grey metallic.

Inside, the M2 also gains plenty of sporting attitude. The updates include specific gauge dials and needles, sport seats wrapped in Dakota leather, blue contrast stitching, leather-wrapped M steering wheel and gearshift knob, an M2 trim strip made from open-pore carbon fiber, and Alcantara door panel inserts.

While there is no specific launch date, BMW does anticipate the 2016 M2 hitting dealer lots in the spring of 2016. The price will hit the newswire as we approach the model’s release date.
