German car magazine AutoZeitung recently published a report that claims BMW is on the verge of creating a 9 Series Coupe. Rumors about such a project have been floating around for a little bit, but this report is adding fuel to the fire.

According to the report, the BMW 9 Series Coupe will ride on the same platform as the next-gen Rolls-Royce Phantom. People are speculating that the production car will share many similarities with the Vision Future Luxury Concept, which is great news. Interestingly enough, BMW is said to be strongly considering using suicide doors, which would certainly set the 9 Series Coupe apart from the rest of the automaker’s model lineup.

Expect the interior of the new coupe to completely outshine the current 7 Series. It should be packed with even more technology, plus feature more premium materials. Considering how luxurious and advanced the new 7 Series line is, the 9 Series should blow most people away. This is the sort of thing that Mercedes’ nightmares are made of.

Reportedly, BMW is evaluating a few powertrain options for the 9 Series lineup, including the N55 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six and the N63 twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. There’s also a hybrid 9 Series, called the 940e, in the mix. The 9 Series Coupe will likely come with the N63 under the hood, which would give it a serious punch, something buyers who will plunk down a huge chunk of change on the car most definitely should expect.

Obviously, the upcoming BMW 9 Series Coupe will be a direct competitor to the Mercedes S-Class Coupe. It might also be a solid competitor for the Maybach, considering the rumors of how upscale the interior should be. All indications point to the car coming to the United States and China, which should be the biggest markets for the luxury coupe.
