Apple Could Purchase McLaren, Creating The Ultimate Car
First, we heard rumors that the Apple car program, Project Titan, has evolved into just an autonomous technology project. Now, a report from the Financial Times claims the Silicon Valley giant is looking to buy either part or all of McLaren Automotive.
A surprising number of people seem to not have a clue what McLaren is all about. Car nerds know the crazy abilities of McLaren’s supercars all too well.
My first reaction to the news was shock, because you just don’t think of Apple and McLaren in the same sentence. In all honesty, sometimes the best alliances are ones that are a little unexpected, but under the surface make a lot of sense. Just look at how the Volvo-Geely relationship has turned out.
At this point, we’re looking at either a full takeover of McLaren, or Apple investing in the company as a way to have access to an incredibly capable automaker. Apple products are already known for being a little more high-end, so teaming up with a company that makes pricey vehicles could be a great pairing.
In the past, people have speculated that Apple was looking at buying Tesla, or at least becoming a large stakeholder in the company. The merger with Solar City might have changed Apple’s plans.
McLaren could use the cash influx from Apple, as the Financial Times reports it’s in the red, so this could be a huge boon for both companies.
