I’m not surprised that Chevy is canning the SS, they made it the representative car of the Sprint Car Series in Nascar, but I never understood why they would do such a thing with the Nascar motto of Win Sunday, Sell Monday, when the SS was only available in very limited amounts in dealers’ showrooms here in the states. People usually don’t want to have to order and wait months for a car like the SS. Had they kept some stock here I bet the sales numbers would have greatly differed.

Chevy released a $45k+ performance sedan in an economy that even those who claim has recovered admit is recovering sluggishly. I wonder why they’re not selling. Morons. Now, if they could find a place in the Northern Hemisphere to build it, build more of them, and cut the price by $10k, it would be a bigger seller than the Impala.

The SS was a rebadged Pontiac G8, a great car with a strong cult following. After Pontiac got axed in GM’s restructuring, they brought it back as the SS. But here is why it didn’t sell.

(1) The G8 had sexy Pontiac styling, people often mistook it for a BMW with its side profile and twin grille, the SS looks like a Malibu. If GM has spent a bit on money on a front end panel and hood to give it more of a Camaro look, things could have been different. Even a nickel for Camaro taillights would have helped.

(2) GM didn’t keep the car updated, a 6 year old game plan won’t cut it. The LS2 engine had only 415 hp and terrible gas mileage. The LT1 engine paired with a 8 speed would provide much better gas mileage (no guzzler tax) and 460 hp, which is needed to be competitive with the Charger SRT8′s 485 hp.

(3) The SS cost too much. The G8GT was a $33K car fully loaded, the G8GXP, which is virtually identical to the SS, cost $37K. For the $47K this car cost, you were competing against the Charger SRT8, which has its own distinctive grille and a 485 hp V8, and starting this year, and 8 speed automatic.

So GM was asking people to pay top dollar for a musclecar that was light on horsepower but thirsty, and anonymous on the road when buyers want a car that gets noticed. While the SS had vastly better handing than the Charger, that was not enough. GM has turbocharged V8 versions of the Commodore it sells in Australia, why didn’t they send one of those 550-600 hp engines with the SS?

Dodge gives the lessons on how to do it right. The 707hp Charger Hellcat will never sell in large numbers, but it gets enormous amounts of free press, and plenty of people that come in to see it will leave with a V8 Charger RT or SRT. The Charger’s styling is distinctive, and the SRT pricing is more reasonable, while the RT is a absolute bargain.

Right now Dodge OWNS the musclecar image. GM has to try much harder to play in this game. I think they should consider reviving Pontiac as a high performance division to compete with Dodge. At the very least, any Chevy that tries to play in this game needs distinctive, macho styling and the best GM has to offer in terms of performance.

  I love pontiacs. Sad to see them go. I have a 4th Generation formula trans am convertible, 1965 tri power Gto 4speed, and a Grand am. My dad has a rare RAIV gto(he is the original owner) and a 1966 tri power 4 speed Gto.

  Pontiac’s downfall was it’s stylings. To the basic consumer, every model looked the same including a lack luster styling of the re-launched GTO. When everyone else was starting to go retro muscle with stylings the GTO just become another Pontiac with a pointy front end.

    I totally agree.The last generation Trans Am’s more resembled speed boats than hot rods. That said, the Firebird remains one of my two favorite cars of all time. It, and the Dodge Charger sit at the top of my list.

  I agree what the idiots SHOULD have done is made Pontiac its performance division, Cadillac its luxury division, Chevrolet its family division, and GMC its truck division and then focused all their energies into these 4 categories.

I agree with your comments. I was very interested in purchasing a 2014 SS but the cost was outrageous and the SS did not look as good as my G8. I purchased a 2009 G8 without all the goodies and it cost me 30k, the SS costs 44k which includes a $1,300 gas guzzler tax. I believe that GM made a big mistake by loading up the car with all the options and in essence priced the car out of people are willing to pay and installing a motor that will meet the EPA reguirements. I believe that pontiac sold 18,000 car in 2008 and 2009 and only 2166 through October. Enough said, major mistakes by GM lead to the dismal sales figures.

I have an 09 G8 GT and love the car I get 24 mpg when I drive the speed limit lol, but 20.5 mpg most the time due to my heavy foot. A lot of people assumed it was a BMW at first look. I wanted to buy the SS and might still get one, but my local dealer this year only got one in stock and it sold 2 days after they got it. I asked when they would get another one and they told me they are not sure when they can get another one and I would probably have to order one just to get one they way I want it…

Man, I have to say, you are 100% correct. I am ashamed at the effort that GM put into the SS brand. The baddest 4 door Chevy from the 90′s was always the SS, and to this day I often wonder why they don’t put the same time and energy they used for the CTS V and build a real 4 door sports car with a detuned version of the new Vette engine around a body style that should make your draw drop when you see it drive by or even hear the grumble of the V8. Dodge created the Hemi, SRT8, SRT8 392, and the Hellcat. Chevy has the Z28, SS, ZL1, but it doesn’t have a top model to compete with the Hellcat, and it doesn’t plan to. Until someone really serious about the SS brand will take this car and make it as popular as the Vette, but a 4 door, blown version. This brand should be terrorizing the track over in Germany, all overseas, not a bland, average looking wedge of a design from another recycled model. Start off fresh and make something that can compete with the Hellcats and the Germans

  Lackluster designing. Why put that much performance enigineering into a car that looks like a Malibu?? It’s just dissappointing. If we saw one on the road, would we even recognize it? I just don’t understand why they made, apparently, no distinguishing performance appearance packages for a car branded an “SS?” The same was true of the late model GTO. The design was completely boring. At a time when car manufacturers had switched to designing large sports cars with big wheel wells that allowed for larger rims (20+), GM brings a car design from overseas that houses tiny 17 inch wheels, and overall, small, import-like dimensions. GM was just clueless and stubborn for too, too many years. I thought they pulled out of it with the Camaro, but dropped the ball again with the boring-looking, uninspired SS.

GM still suffers from Brand Superiority within the Corporation. Only now, with just 4 brands to contend with, the pissing contests never seem to end. If GM does decide to bring a nameplate back, I do hope that it is Pontiac. I can just imagine what a Firebird would look like using the Camaro architecture.

The Pontiac GTO and G8 from the 2000s, were not designed or engineered by Pontiac at all. They are not even American cars. They were designed and engineered by Holden. Holden is an Australian car company thats been around since the early 1900s. Holden is a subsidiary of GM, but a separate company. GM began bringing Holdens to the USA and they rebadged them as Pontiacs. Vice versa Gm sends Chevys to Australia and rebadges them Holden.

  A Corvette is a sports car, not a muscle car. Muscle cars have seating for four, and big American V8s. They are based on the architectures of regular sedans, not purpose built sports cars chassis like the Corvette has. Try not to act so juvenile when you post.

    That may have been true back in the 60′s and 70′s, but not anymore. The Challengers, Camaros and Mustangs are considered muscle cars. While the Challenger and Camaro use sedan chassis, the Mustang hasn’t in quite some time. I believe the previous generation didn’t share its chassis with any other vehicle.

  If you read my posts, you will see I have my facts straight. I said the SS had the LS2 engine, and gave the horsepower, which was still not enough to compete with Dodge. The first fail for GM was not putting the Stingray’s engine in the car. I also said the SS was virtually indentical to the GXP. Serving up a warmed over GXP at premium prices is not a winning game plan.

An SS with a 3.6 V6 under $35k, and a V8 this side of $40k and they would have been in business. With a little luck maybe GM will build a a four door SS on the smaller, next Gen Camaro platform.

Surprised the Durango is getting shut down so soon after the redesign. You can’t throw a rock around here and not hit one. So I was assuming they sold really well. Rented one about 2 years ago and really liked it. I was looking into getting one, and was shocked to see it on this list.

Wrong. The SS and the G8 GXP had the LS3 motor, not the LS2 as you mentioned. There is a difference in the motor, for one is the displacement. 6L vs 6.2L and few of the internals such as the cams , compression are different. Do your research

  They are called “blind spots” because you can’t see that spot from your side mirrors either, otherwise they wouldn’t be blind. Some trucks have huge blind spots, especially the latest F-150 Super Crew. If you rely solely on the side mirrors, you will change lanes into someone. This is solved on the F-250 by the addition of 2 extra mirrors and there truly are no blind spots - but it does take some time to get accustomed to using 4 mirrors.

You can’t compare a 99 first gen Durango to a third gen Durango. The new one is a huge leap. I had an ’03 and liked it a lot. Now I have a 2012 and it’s fantastic.

2 door Impala SS with duel Turbo V6 rwd, 8 speed Auto or 6 manual, a cooler grill/hood, rear half of the roof line more sloped and the signature 3 round tail lights, would sell much better than the SS which looks like the last gen Malibu. The demise of Cadillac’s CTS Wagon demonstrates that American buyers are a stupid bunch that appreciate style over substance especially when the CTS Wagon offers as much capacity as some SUVs and how according to one magazine that Cadillac only needed to sell 39 wagons to recoup all of the engineering cost to build the wagon as this along with the CTS-V coupe will become instant collector cars.

The CTS wagon looks like a damn hearse. I’m glad it’s getting the ax. Cadillac should learn a lesson, just because their cars are expensive status symbols, doesn’t mean people are going to drive them when they look like part of a funeral convoy. And the escalade needs to step up it’s game too, it’s a Tahoe, but you pay an extra $20,000 for shiny plastic and a Cadillac symbol.

it definitely is not a mini van. It’s a fantastic drive and gets great mileage. I get around 26-30mpg with the v6

  Glad you had a good experience with your Durango. We bought the 2011 Durango (first year it was redesigned)..read the reviews & it had the 3rd row seat & options we wanted. After driving it a few days we realized that we bought a piece of junk…the windows always whistled like they weren’t all the way up, things rattled & jiggled but the dealer couldn’t figure out how to fix after having it in shop a few times…trim on the interior fell off.. We tried to trade it in about a month later & they wanted to give us $8k less than we payed..a few other local dealerships had a bunch of ’11 models already traded back in…about 6 months later the Nissan dealer took it as a trade (had less than 6k miles on it) for our payoff..lost our nice down payment but got rid of it. Worst purchase we ever made!

The Fit EV may be a temporary dust biting though. It was a compliance car, and Honda will go back into its data to see if it is feasible to produce in en mass. I am willing to bet we see it again in a few years. The Fit itself is one of the best small hatchbacks on the market, adding an electric drivetrain just seems too good to pass up.

My 07 FJ has proven over time and again, to be superior in all ways that matter to me. And as a competent driver who knows what side/rear-view mirrors are for and turns my head before switching lanes the “blind spot” hasn’t been a problem. I understand why there are so many bumper stickers that say jeeps are for chicks, but it’s to each his own.

I like the FJ, but I spent 2 weeks in Colorado and it was a rare sight, on and off road. Lots of Jeeps, very few of which were driven by chicks.

When the Plymouth brand & Voyager was killed, they said everyone would migrate from the lower cost Plymouth to the lower cost Chrysler Voyager. That NEVER happened! In killing the 100 year old Dodge brand, they are removing a lower cost brand to make room for more crappy Fiats & Alfas. Meanwhile, the people that were buying the “sportier” or lower cost Dodge Caravan are blown off as customers, forced to revert to one of the Asian minivan wanna-bes. Chrysler never recaptured the 50k or so Voyager owners, and nor will they get the former Caravan buyers. This is almost the end of the Dodge marque. The Dart is a Fiat of dubious quality & the SRT (WTH?) brand is DOA. All that is left are the poorly packaged Charger dated Challenger. Now that they killed the Pentastar logo, that has been used since 1963, and is one the top 10 most recognized graphic symbols, he gives us FCA (“Fixing” Chrysler Again) because it is “global”!

The Jaguar XKE from around 1962 was/is a better looking car than almost all the current models from almost all the car companies. Car designers (or is it just the executives who have the final decision?) just don’t know the difference between “change” and “improvement”.

I own a 2009 Nissan Cube. I love the damn thing. Still gets 31.5 miles to the gallon highway. Rides like a cloud. Turns on a dime. Low maintenance. Gets lots of looks and compliments wherever I go. Very comfortable interior. Loaded with character. I don’t think such a charismatic car is meant to go on forever. I’m sure glad I own one.

One reason is the base price of this Chevrolet Super Sport and second, this vehicle doesn’t have a direct name. Believe it or not most consumers want actual names to rely on …Chevy Tahoe, for instance. However, this car has the potential but the price and its competition is too hefty for its lifespan. What a waste of production, money and engineers time for their effort of building a high-performance remake of the Pontiac G8 in V-8 form.

The CTS-V details are incorrect: only 500 (last-gen) CTS-V coupes were produced in 2015, no sedans or wagons. 2014 was the last year for the -V wagon. (I own one.)

Just a note that the Toyota FJ Cruiser is nothing like a Jeep Wrangler. The only similarity is in looks, because Toyota decided to go with retro styling for the FJ to remind people of the original 70s era Toyota Land Cruiser. IIRC, the FJ’s drivetrain is either Corolla or Camry based. Actually, it’s a much BETTER car than the Wrangler.

The FJ is based on the last generation 4Runner and Tacoma and is basically mechanically identical to them. No Corolla or Camry engines. It’s always been a body-on-frame truck based SUV

I havwe a feeling the Dodge Durango is going to come back as the Ram Durango. Chrysler has said that Dodge is going to be their sports car line which does not leave much room for a SUV. Also with Ram being the new truck line, shouldn’t the SUV be there?

The SS/G8 never had a chance. The G8 fell to the Obama axe after just being introduced, and the SS, while every bit as awesome a vehicle as the G8, suffered from extremely boring styling. If they’d given it the same treatment they gave the 2015 Impala, for example, or even made it look more like the Camaro, it might have been a success. Unfortunately, nobody wanted to pay $40,000 for a car that looked like a VW Passat.

I’d considered the SS and didn’t mind the price but didn’t understand how my Camaro SS and then Corvette had similar horsepower and better gas mileage plus guzzler tax. I couldn’t justify using this car with the amount of miles I drive. I settled on the Cadillac ATS and I’m loving it. I can’t wait for the ATS V and maybe I’ll trade up to that.

I think that GM should have engineered a new SS, while making the Cadillac CTS, using the same platform. Why is it that Cadillac is the only badge that gets to use the Alpha platform? Yes, the new Camaro is on Alpha, but why do we have to wait until 2016 for Chevrolet to use Alpha on a car?

best vehicle for the money was my 2008 dodge caravan 296k and no issues yes we did regular maintance with all moblie 1 fluids finally the paint was beat off it and the seats wore out from 5 kids beating it to death it still runs fine but time killed it

Just for the record saturn did not fail due to lack of change. It got sucked up into GM’s bullshit in 08 then gm cancelled it….look at the records saturn was doing great up untill 07 when saturn was operating separately from gm. Then gm and saturn had disagreements. And gm took over…

As a Toyota fan, I think the FJ Cruiser was kind of a joke when it comes to making an honest effort to compete with the Jeep Wrangler.
I don’t understand axing the Durango either. It would be an awesome platform for the EcoDiesel…much better suited for it than the Jeep Grand Cherokee anyway.

I own a 2011 and it is one of the very best vehicles that I have ever owned and truly just love it! Have owned Jeep CJ/s, Wranglers, Chevrolet Blazers, but none even compare to what the FJ has going for it. 50,000 miles and not one problem, only one recall for the rear seat belt anchors, still has the original brakes with 80% life left, 260 horsepower, (very responsive), a constant 21 Mile per gallon, regardless if off road, in town, or on the highway.

Underneath the plastic covering on the bumpers it has an all steel frame, steel rock slider bars, skid plates, and is one tough vehicle that can go anywhere. For those people that adapt a vehicle for full off road, many, many options, such as larger tires, winches, bumpers, etc.. can be added, with very minor alterations.

The tires are still the original tires, with absolutely no cupping of the front tires that the Chevrolet and Jeep always had, and required rotating every 2,000 miles to get any kind of tire life at all. Has more room in the back that that the Jeeps had, while only making the wheebase just slightly longer. Off road it has your hi range and low range gearing with posi-lock, front to back and from wheel to wheel, (all four wheels), that allow it to go where my jeep wrangler could never take me.

The SS was not a G8 The G8 is the Chevy Caprice. The SS was brought to the US because of NASCAR regulations. The SS replaced the Impala for racing and thus must be a retail unit available for sale to the public. It was cheaper than building a new car. A company called Trans Am Deport http://www.transamdepot.com has the exclusive rights to use the Pontiac name and badging and uses Camaros to build Trans Ams, Firebirds, GTOs etc.

They say that the Dodge Durango could shift brands and be rebranded… But it already has. Its the exact same as a Jeep Grand Cherokee. What sucks is that the Durango is a good looking truck. If the Cherokee and Durango had more differences between them the Durango would sell like hotcakes. People will buy a Jeep instead because of the name and “reliability”. GM made a HUGE mistake by cutting off the Trail Blazer. It was a HUGE seller and the quality/mpg were great. They went too cross-over and the traverse is more of a mom mobile than an crossover/SUV. Chevrolet made a big mistake releasing the SS as a rebadged SS. The G8 was far better looking and the styling was very dated. Also you have the new Impala which is FAR BETTER looking and the Malibu which is great looking and fuel efficient. GM should have made a 450+HP coupe. You can call it a Monte Carlo or ElCamino but it would fit the niche of consumers that want a powerful coupe that’s not as sporty as a Camaro, Mustang, Challenger yet can keep up with them. I would love to see GM make a retro Buick Grand National (1987 era) or a Monte Carlo/ 442. They are nearly 30 years old, I think Americans would love a bad ass Monte Carlo SS with the G-body.

The writer evidently never dealt with dealers. That’s why there were three variations of the Chrysler minivans. You always had a dealer nearby. I believe a new Durango will be a Ram badge based off of the Grand Cherokee. But considering the reboot of dealerships, many sell Dodge, Ram, and Jeep together. So it’s unnecessary.

In ’65 Pontiac released an accessory package (PN 984716) that included a air cleaner pan and a foam seal and instructions on how to cut a hole in the hood. An analogous package was sold by Pontiac parts counters for the ’66 GTO (PN 984717). Bottom pan was revised to accommodate larger center carb for Tri-Power set ups and a kit to re-route fuel line feed to carbs. Mid-year ‘66 Pontiac produced between 25-50 “XS” Ram-Air Tri-Power GTOs in 1966 which had hotter “744” cam (PN 9785744), stiffer valve springs, .022″ “thin” head gaskets, blocked heat riser to center carb, Armasteel crankshaft, revised distributor curve, bigger fuel pump and fuel lines. Only a handful, 25-50 1966 GTOs with the XS option were produced before GM corporate commanded that only the Corvette would receive multi-carb set ups from that point on.

I thought the SATURN was being discontinued but didn’t find it listed?
How about the Cube and Fit; surprised me because of economy and seeing
lots on the streets. Personally I did not like their small size but the Fit had
some style appeal and the Honda name behind it was good.
Nothing like our cars of the 60′s…right?!!! This Senior loved GTO’s, Mustangs,
Firebirds…ah, those were the days when you were master of the car…not all
new technology driving it.
I suggest manufacturers make an SR model (we have S, SL, V, etc)…the SR
would be low technology…FOR SENIORS.
