The Takata airbag recall is growing even more, this time with Ford recalling 447,310 vehicles. The issue is the driver’s side airbag inflator, which when activated can shrapnel, sending sharp metal tearing through the airbag and into the driver. The recall was requested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Some media outlets have been incorrectly reporting that the massive Takata airbag recall is affecting vehicles that are produced by Japanese manufacturers, potentially putting lives at risk as drivers with American and European cars are unaware that they are driving around with an inflator that can shrapnel and leaving them bleeding to death.

The recalled Ford vehicles are:
2005-2008 Ford Mustangs built between August 18, 2004, and June 25, 2007 at the at Flat Rock Assembly Plant
2005-2006 Ford GTs built between February 11, 2005, and January 30, 2006 at the at the Wixom Assembly Plant

That brings the total number of Ford vehicles recalled because of the driver’s side airbag inflator to 502,489 units. Of those, 462,911 are located in the United States. An expansion on the recall issued only at the beginning of the month addresses concerns over the inflator for the front passenger side airbag on Ford Rangers and GTs, pumping up the total recall number to 538,977 units.

Ford says so far there is one injury it thinks is a result of the recall issue, but that number could grow as the investigation deepens. There have been deaths believed to be linked to Takata airbag inflators from people driving vehicles not made by Ford, so this recall is extremely serious.

Car owners can have their local dealership replace any recalled airbag inflators at no cost to them, and are advised to do so immediately.
