Nissan Shows Off the Fully Redesigned 2016 Maxima

The Super Bowl isn’t the most traditional place to debut a new car, but Nissan decided to go against the grain and use one of the event’s super-expensive ad slots as its venue to debut the all-new 2016 Maxima. The details behind the four-door sports car are still very scarce, as all we really have to go off of is a single scene in a commercial (below) and a few pictures.

With that said, the pictures are worth a thousand words, so to say, as they show a totally redesigned sedan that looks just about as extreme as a family sedan can look. The powerful body lines, the muscular hips, the rolling hood, and the swoopy body line all look as if they belong on a far more expensive sedan, but I assure you, this is indeed a Nissan Maxima. If this all looks a little familiar to you, it should, as this is clearly the production version of the Sport Sedan Concept that Nissan debuted back in 2014.

The looks of this car make me wonder what this sedan is packing under that sexy hood. Chances are that Nissan will continue to let the Maxima ride with the 3.5-liter V-6 that it has for ages, but it’ll likely goose the power a bit to clear the 300-horsepower mark, However, I cannot help but dream of a Nismo version of this that features a turbocharged V-6 that’s good for 400-plus horsepower. I think the market is ready for that from Nissan, but we already saw Nissan’s luxury arm kill off the Q50 Eau Rouge, so a super-sedan from Nissan is likely not going to happen. Not to say there won’t be a Nismo model, but a 400-plus-horse one is likely a no-go.

Stay tuned for more details, as the 2016 Nissan Maxima will make its full debut at the 2015 New York Auto Show in April.
