VW Will Unveil a New Crossover Concept at the Detroit Auto Show

Despite its cult-like following, Volkswagen has been struggling — relatively, of course — to maintain sales in the U.S., as its sales are down 11 percent from January through November. VW’s not panicking though, as it knows exactly how to mend sales struggles in America, and that is to build a new crossover, according to a report from Reuters. My fellow Americans seem to flock to new crossovers like mosquitoes to a bug zapper and quickly toss money to the nearest sales guy to get into these soccer-mom mobiles, so I can’t blame VW for going this direction. However, I cannot help but voice my disgust at the idea of yet another crossover. The Reuters report goes on to claim that a five-seat version of this new crossover will make its debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2015.

Little is known about this new crossover, except that it will likely roll off of the production line in 2016 or 2017 and will join the existing Tiguan and Touareg in the VW lineup. Also known is that this crossover will also hit dealerships in both five- and seven-seat configurations, so it should slot above the five-passenger Touareg in terms of size and price. More details on this model will roll out as we approach the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Other happenings in the future of VW’s crossover lineup include the redesigning of the Tiguan compact crossover and the addition of a four-door coupe version. Reports also point toward a long-wheelbase version of the Tiguan that may include a hybrid powertrain.
