Volvo Reveals The New S90 Sedan

After a big buildup and much anticipation, Volvo revealed the all-new S90 sedan. It provides a decidedly Swedish alternative to popular German models such as the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class. Even more important, it demonstrates that the 2016 XC90 wasn’t a fluke, that Volvo has indeed struck out in a beautiful new direction.

Like the XC90, it has some great design cues that make it stand out, including Thor’s Hammer running lights and Volvo’s new signature grille. The rear strikes out in a slightly different direction than the brand’s three-row crossover, borrowing somewhat from the well-received Volvo Concept Coupe.

Motivating the S90 is a T8 gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain that pumps out 407 horsepower, borrowed from the XC90.

Loads of cutting-edge technologies are included on the S90. For example, the City Safety system has a completely new large animal detection feature that should spare the lives of many deer and other creatures that love to wander onto roads. It also comes with a huge tablet in the center stack, plus cloud-based apps and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto for pairing with a smartphone.

Of course the interior is the embodiment of Swedish simplicity, but fortunately not of the Ikea variety. It has soft leather and porous wood trim, which should please people who abhor cheap plastic. Sweetening the deal are the front seats that are arguably the most comfortable in the auto industry right now.

Volvo has a stellar reputation for safety, and the S90 promises to uphold that status. It should be loaded with the same innovations as the XC90 and might be packed with some extra surprises the Swedes could reveal later.

The official public unveiling of the Volvo S90 will happen in Detroit as part of the North American International Auto Show. It will arrive at dealerships not too long after that. A V90 will be coming up in the near future as well, rounding out the new product offering at the top of Volvo’s lineup.
