Volvo Preparing Massive Lineup Makeover

Anyone who’s been paying attention to Volvo lately knows that the Swedish automaker is up to something. The 2016 XC90 marks a big departure from the first-generation of the midsize crossover, pushing more upmarket with premium materials and an impressive array of features. The kind of transformation that the XC90 went through is similar to a metamorphosis the brand is experiencing, which will present a bold new face to the public.

As we reported before, Volvo is looking to expand its model lineup. The first big push is to create an S90 an V90, which are respectively a midsize sedan and wagon. The S90 will replace the S80, a vehicle that’s seen pretty flat sales since it launched. The expectation is that the new sedan will inject more excitement and eye-catching design into the brand.

Both vehicles should be revealed in 2016 and launched shortly after. The S90 should break cover for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, which is set for January. The V90 should appear later in the year. The same powertrain options from the XC90 will likely be used for both models, including a plug-in hybrid setup. Spy footage of both models has been scarce, to say the least, meaning that Volvo is keeping development under an incredibly tight lid.

Also reported by us is the fact that Volvo is establishing a new production facility in South Carolina. It’s a smart move even though the XC90 should continue to be a big seller in the United States, because the Volvo -60 models are the best-sellers in the region.

By the time 2018 rolls around, the S60, XC60 and V60 will all be redesigned, just in time for the new production facility to open. Reportedly, all three models will share a modular platform, just like the -90 models.
