Volvo is looking to increase production of its Polestar models for 2015, which is welcome news to people who desire some Swede speed. If you don’t know what Volvo’s Polestar models are, just think of a regular S60 sedan or V60 wagon that could seriously trash a number of “hot” models available from other automakers today. Essentially, Volvo has kissed its safety-only, buttoned-up, jacket-with-patches-on-the-sleeves image goodbye and is embracing a new kind of irreverence that is refreshing and liberating.

Last year, Volvo only made 750 Polestar models for the entire world, and just 120 came to the United States, making them incredibly rare. The cars sold briskly, which apparently surprised Volvo. The good news is that the strong demand means a bigger batch is being cooked up in Sweden, so if you didn’t have your chance to scoop one up in 2014 you aren’t out of luck. Just how many are going to be made this year is still a mystery.

It’s easy to see why people went crazy over the Polestar models. A number of car reviewers have been pleasantly surprised by the performance the sedan and wagon provide. The 2015 models feature a peak engine output of 345 horsepower, plus they have a Haldex all-wheel drive system. In other words, the vehicles come with a decent punch that might not hold a candle to a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, but they also stick turns quite well instead of just charging ahead in a straight line. In other words, the Polestar models are great for taking on a turn-filled canyon road.

Adding to the good news is the hint that Polestar and Volvo will deepen their relationship. That could mean more models will get the Polestar performance treatment, like maybe the XC60 or the upcoming V90 wagon. Considering that Volvo is playing around with crazy tech like a triple-boost engine that kicks out 450 horsepower, it would be intriguing to see what Polestar can do to dial up the boost even more.
