Out of the few people who are fortunate enough to own the Porsche 918 Spyder, even fewer will ever be able to test out the car’s top speed. Fortunately, everyone can live vicariously through Porsche’s well-documented experience of pushing the vehicle to 217 mph on a public road.

The company had to go Down Under in the Outback, where for now there’s a 72-kilometer stretch of rural road where there is no speed limit. The guide is for drivers to maintain a speed that keeps them and everyone else on the road safe. When you’re sitting behind the steering wheel of a potent supercar, that can make for some interesting interpretations of the meaning of “safe.”

One of the most amazing things about the experience was how quickly the hybrid supercar reached 217 mph. It took a mere 40 seconds, or about the same time a Mitsubishi Mirage requires to run a quarter mile. That kind of time isn’t too difficult to believe, considering that the gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain pumps out an earth-shattering combined 887 horsepower ad 994 lb.-ft. of torque. Anyone who would even begin to compare the performance of the Porsche to a Toyota Prius just doesn’t get it.

Lest you think the Germans were being safe, apparently the course was actually monitored for the possibility of traffic. Even though the whole thing was done on a public road, the public certainly wasn’t present for it. Also, a professional driver was behind the wheel. Fortunately, while the Porsche 918 Spyder was tearing down the road, no marsupials jumped in the way.

The whole top speed test was part of Porsche’s E-Mobility tour. It involves taking the 918 Spyder to various locations as a way to promote the hybrid technology. Even though all of the supercars are spoken for, it’s only a matter of time before similar powertrains will become available on models like the 911.
