Alfa Romeo wants to make a big comeback in the United States in the most desperate way. While the 4C is a great car, it appeals to a fairly narrow group of performance enthusiasts. The upcoming Giulia, on the other hand, promises more mass appeal since it will accommodate shopping bags, suit cases, more than two people and even golf clubs.

Just because the sedan will be more practical doesn’t meant that it won’t offer some genuine thrills. As you can see below, Alfa Romeo is really putting the Giulia through the paces at the legendary Nurburgring, the place where automakers go to test the mettle of their more hardcore vehicles.

The Giulia will be facing some incredibly tough competition, such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series. While it might seem that Alfa Romeo has bitten off more than it could chew, its new performance sedan is looking better and better with each piece of leaked information. The Giulia packs a real punch, thanks to the twin-turbo V-6 engine under the hood, which is supposed to pump out 510 horsepower, plus a raucous chorus that should please any car enthusiast.

Keep in mind that the Giulia is still very much a work in progress, so hopefully those twitchy corners will be ironed out for the production model. Part of the purpose of taking the car to the Nurburgring is to help Alfa Romeo fine tune everything. Still, after seeing the video, it’s easy to imagine that the Italian automaker will be able to secure a much bigger foothold in the United States than it currently enjoys.
