Toyota Stretches Out The GT86

Toyota has finally done it. After people mocked up all kinds of renderings, and Subaru went rogue with its BRZ-based Cross Sport Design Concept, the automaker went ahead and made a GT86 Shooting Brake of its own. Enthusiasts around the world are losing their collective minds.

What’s there not to love? The car was already a naturally-aspirated, well-balanced and rear-wheel-drive. Then Toyota added a funky wagon-like backend, boosting its practicality slightly and making it far cooler.

If you go to your local Toyota dealership and ask them about the GT86 Shooting Brake, you might find yourself becoming a proud new owner of a RAV4 or something hideous like that, so don’t bother. It’s just a concept vehicle.

If enough people say they’d totally buy one, maybe Toyota would be fooled into thinking it could actually sell a lot of these things. After all, the coupe version of the car hasn’t exactly been a sales superstar, so why not try mixing things up? It’s just a matter of getting the killjoys inside Toyota to sign off on something fun for a change.

There’s no engine boost or other modifications to the GT86 Shooting Brake, other than ripping off the back roof. It’s a great solution to the problem of wanting a sports car and needing to haul around lumber and small pieces of furniture at the same time.
