Toyota Recalls 6.5 Million Vehicles For Fire Risk
Here we go again.
Toyota is recalling a large number of vehicles. About 6.5 million cars have a problem that could start a fire, making fixing the issue something nobody should put off. In the United States, the recall involves about 2 million vehicles.
The culprit is the driver’s side power window master switch, which possibly was made with not enough grease to lubricate things. While that might not sound like a big deal, it is, because it can trigger a short circuit. As the switch assembly overheats, it could possibly melt and trigger a fire in the vehicle. That’s a very bad thing.
Several models are part of the recall in the United States. They are the 2007 and 2009 Camry and Camry Hybrid (not the 2008), the 2009 to 2011 Corolla, the 2008 to 2011 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid, the 2009 to 2011 Matrix, the 2006 to 2011 RAV4, the 2009 to 2011 Sequoia, the 2009 to 2011 Tundra, the 2006 to 2010 Yaris, the 2009 to 2011 Scion xB and the 2009 to 2010 Scion xD. It’s important to note that only certain vehicles from the list actually pose a fire risk, but they need to be inspected to ensure there isn’t a problem in the future.
Toyota USA says it’s in the process of sending notices to vehicle owners through first class mail. As of the writing of this, no specific recall date had been released by Toyota.
To address the issue, dealers will inspect the suspect switch and apply a great that’s heat-resistant. If the switch still is a risk, technicians will swap out an internal circuit board.
This isn’t the first time Toyota has had problems of this nature. It recalled certain vehicles from the 2007 to 2009 model years not that long ago, thanks to an alternative application method for the lubricant.
