Toyota Prius Sales Hit A Wall
The Toyota Prius has fallen on tough times, with sales slumping. If you listen closely, you can hear thousands of automotive enthusiasts cheering.
Despite launching a “sporty” fourth generation of the famous hybrid, American consumers just aren’t biting. Reuters and others are blaming low gas prices for the lack of interest in the Prius. While that’s probably a factor, there’s also the unabashed ugliness of this new generation. The previous version of the Prius wasn’t exactly a looker, but Toyota designers have taken the car in a bad direction.
When the Prius Prime launches in the latter part of the fall, we’ll see if the premium plug-in hybrid version of the car will help turn things around. Considering the Prius was the car got the hybrid revolution going strong, it’s surprising Toyota is so late to the game with a PHEV.
Even though Toyota’s loading the Prius Prime with luxury features like a heated steering wheel, an 11.6-inch HD touchscreen and wireless charging pad will shoppers even care? Right now, most people are looking for a crossover/SUV or pickup truck, because we all have short term memory loss and forget that gas won’t stay cheap forever.
