If you think that it’s a done deal that Toyota and BMW will work together to bring about the second coming of the Supra, you might be in for an unpleasant shock. According to a recent post on BMW Blog, the two automakers are still making up their minds about whether they’ll move forward with the project.

It’s been well-known that BMW and Toyota are actually collaborating on three different sports car projects for the past several years. That news has injected hope into enthusiasts’ hearts that Toyota will stop trying to position the Camry as a performance model that’s “grounded to the ground.”

According to Toyota executives, so far the sports car projects are on-schedule, but nothing’s set in cement at the moment. They divulged that by the end of 2015, a decision will be made to either forge ahead or scrap the whole pursuit.

Toyota would presumably use the collaboration to create the Supra successor. Rumors have been flying around that the other two sports car models would be a modern MR2 and Celica, but nothing about those projects have been confirmed. Common speculation is that BMW will be using the combined efforts to craft a replacement for the aging Z4.

Some are even wondering if bringing back the Supra would mean Lexus would make another SC that would be more sports car-like than the first generation of the luxury coupe.

BMW and Toyota have a solid agreement to continue working together until 2020, at the minimum. If they play nice together, the cozy arrangement could continue much longer. The two companies aren’t just playing around with sports car concepts, but are also working to pioneer lithium-air battery technology, lightweight materials and even better hydrogen fuel cells.
