Top Gear Gains A Familiar Friend

Getting your significant other interested in watching Top Gear might have become a lot easier. Matt LeBlanc, who’s famous for playing Joey on some obscure TV show called Friends, has been officially announced as one of the presenters, joining the barf-prone Chris Evans.

This selection was met with disdain by some hot-headed people with zero memory of past Top Gear episodes. The thing is Matt LeBlanc is an actor who played someone kinda dumb. The actual guy is at least of average intelligence and is a complete gear head. He was on Top Gear twice for the star in a reasonably priced car segment, claiming the still-standing fastest lap back in 2012 at 1 minute 42.1 seconds behind the wheel of a Kia cee’d.

LeBlanc is really into Porsches, and he’s owned an array of cars, like a few Ferraris (including a murdered-out 360 Challenge). The guy’s attended quite a few Formula One races and interviewed drivers without making a fool of himself, so things should go smoothly with him on the show.

Many hardcore Top Gear fans from across the pond are freaking out because LeBlanc is American, not a proper British lad. Apparently that violates the proud 39-year heritage of the program. The thing is by starting with a clean slate, the BBC has a chance to make Top Gear more appealing and relevant for a worldwide audience, which is a smart move financially and otherwise. Believe it or not, plenty of non-Brits watch and enjoy the show, so having presenters that represent that fact could grow the audience even more.

In the official press release, the BBC said it would be making announcements about additional presenters in the near future. Word on the street is that Chris Harris will be joining up, which is a smart move as well and will add serious expertise. The other rumored host is none other than Sabine Schmitz, who’s the real deal – and she isn’t British.

Here’s to hoping Schmitz keeps making Evans sick, because that would make for some entertaining on-screen moments.
