Much like it did back in the 1980s with the Town & Country, Voyager and Caravan, Chrysler is reinventing a nearly dead segment: the minivan. Sure, there are still a few of these cubish people haulers roaming dealer lots today, but they are nowhere near as popular as they were a few decades ago. With its new Pacifica Hybrid, Chrysler is solving many of the complaints that have pushed these vehicles behind crossovers for large families, including fuel economy.

The standard Pacifica handled the rolling-cube issue minivans have suffered with for years, thanks to its rounded edges, curvy glass and sleek nose. That said, this model still has one big flaw: fuel economy. Enter in the Pacifica Hybrid to ease your soccer-ball-hauling mind.

This model boasts a 3.6-liter V-6 that pairs with an electric motor to produce a respectable 260 horsepower. But where this model really shines is its EPA-certified fuel economy, as it can travel up to 566 miles on a tank of fuel and a fully charged battery (up from the original estimate of 530 miles) and can go 33 miles on electricity alone (up 3 miles from previous estimates). This all combined to give the hybrid minivan a mighty 84 MPGe rating.

Charging the Pacifica Hybrid is a bit of a bear, as it can take up to 14 hours on a 120-volt level-one charger. Opt for the 240-volt level-two charger, and the charging time falls to around two hours.

The estimated cost of fuel and electricity for the 2017 Pacifica Hybrid is a thrifty $900, putting it $550 lower than the standard Pacifica, the Honda Odyssey and the Nissan Quest. At a base price of $34,495, it would take 9.25 years to break even when compared to the most expensive of its competitors, the $29,400 Odyssey.

Is it worth it? That depends on how long you keep your cars and how important being eco-friendly is to you.
