Pickup trucks are far from the safest vehicles on the road, despite the outdated belief that bigger is better. Not a one has ever received the sought after IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation, and it seems as if none of them really care. In fact, some of them (looking at you RAM) received downright scary ratings in some tests. This drought comes to an end with the finalization of the 2017 Honda Ridgeline’s testing.

Despite its shortcomings as a traditional pickup, the Ridgeline continues to impress in just about every other measurable. That now includes safety, thanks to its Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS. This is yet another feather in the cap of the Ridgeline in terms of being a true “family” pickup.

Its closest rival is safety is the full-size F-150, which received a Top Safety Pick – its missing the all-important “+” because of its lack of available automatic braking.

Even more impressive is the fact that the Ridgeline managed to also ace the IIHS’ headlight testing with a “Good” rating. No other pickup truck and very few cars and crossovers pulled off this feat.

So, while the Ridgeline does lack the true ruggedness of a traditional pickup due to its limited cargo-hauling capacity, towing capacity, its soft suspension and plush standard cabin, it continues to show that it’s one of the best options for families who need a pickup truck occasionally.
