The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Exists

Mercedes-Benz sells a lot of CLAs, so BMW is firing back with the 2 Series Gran Coupe. We get a showy look of the car’s C-pillar and one taillight, at least until the Los Angeles auto show in November.

German automakers love these four-door “coupes” and apparently so do image-conscious shoppers. This one is different for BMW since it features front-wheel drive, making it tantamount to heresy among the Bimmer faithful.

BMW is using the same platform as the X1, which is actually a good thing. We don’t know if the 2 Series Gran Coupe has a hatchback-like rear opening, like the 4 Series Gran Coupe, since the photo doesn’t hint one way or the other.

Of course, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe isn’t aimed at enthusiasts in the least, but it does have the BMW badge, which is all-important in some circles. All-wheel drive will be available, but a manual transmission will likely never grace the car. But BMW will market it as a sporty car, something the official press release for this teaser makes reference to a few times.

Following its debut in November, BMW says the 2 Series Gran Coupe will hit the market in spring 2020.
