Tesla Owners Can Now Summon Their Car

Even though Tesla has slapped some limitations on the Autopilot and Autosteer features for the Model S (thanks at least in part to human stupidity) the company has introduced a way to automatically summon it or the Model X using a smartphone. The vehicle pulls up or backs out to where you are, helping you get less exercise on a daily basis.

Tesla has cleverly called this new feature Summon.

In all seriousness, Summon only works for a grand total of 33 feet. That means no calling the car to the front doors of Nordstrom’s if you parked way in the back of the lot, just because you don’t want to carry all of those shopping bags a few hundred feet.

Further killing the fun, Tesla is advising owners not to summon their vehicle in public, at least for now. In other words, it’s a great way to pull into the garage at home, just in case you really hate setting foot in there. The car can even open and close the garage door, which is handy if it’s detached from your house.

Perhaps once Summon has been perfected and is safe for public areas, Tesla drivers will be able to use it for squeezing into impossibly tight parking spots without having to risk opening the doors, like when BMW drivers take up two stalls.

Summon is a beta feature, so don’t expect it to remain in its current state for long. In fact, if there are problems like with Autosteer and Autopilot, expect some changes in the near future. BMW has already openly criticized Tesla for releasing any beta apps for cars, saying that doing so is dangerous and irresponsible. Considering all the YouTube videos of people narrowly avoiding accidents while using Autosteer and Autopilot, the Germans might have a point.

This new feature could easily be used with the weird Tesla robot-snake charger we covered a few months ago. Tesla owners would just tell the car to park in the garage, the plug would be inserted automatically and charging could be managed through a smartphone. Then, when the owner wants to go somewhere, the car can be out and ready to go without stepping into the garage.
