Soon You’ll Be Able to Shop From Your GM Vehicle

You can already use your car’s infotainment system to check sports scores, movie showtimes, and even dictate text messages. GM is taking us to the new level by letting drivers buy stuff while on the road. Yes, the automotive industry just jumped the shark.

This new shopping app, appropriately called Marketplace, has options to buy gas, coffee, or of course dealership services with what’s being described as “ease.” Sorry, but most car infotainment screens aren’t exactly “easy” to use, no matter the marketing spin around them.

The good news is you won’t have to pay for the privilege to shop from your vehicle. Marketplace is free. Right now, there are only about a dozen pay options on it, ranging from Shell to TGI Fridays (it’s apparently still in business) and Dunkin’ Donuts. GM hopes to expand to many more.

Just to clarify, GM is emphasizing that Marketplace has been designed for use while driving. Well, that’s a comfort. After all, with distracted driving such an issue on today’s roads, it’s good to know one automaker is taking a stand that’s completely blind to the problem.

If you have a 2017 or 2018 GM vehicle with the MyLink infotainment system, you’re getting Marketplace. Now, rejoice and order stuff while navigating rush hour traffic.
