If you think the Ford Explorer stinks, soon there might be official government documentation to back up your opinion. NHTSA has launched an official investigation into claims made by Explorer owners that carbon monoxide is leaking into the SUVs’ interiors.

This alleged problem is affecting 2011 to 2015 Ford Explorers. If you know someone who has one and has smelled something strange while driving, you should pass this info along. Carbon monoxide isn’t something you want to mess around with, because breathing enough is fatal.

After taking their vehicle in to be repaired, some owners say the problem wasn’t resolved.

So far, one crash has been blamed on the issue, but nobody was injured. If regulators decide there’s a problem with the SUVs, a recall would be the next step. Exactly how long that would take depends on the details of the investigation.
