January 2015 will mark 50 years since the Shelby Cobra 427 first graced the pavement of the world and delivered outlandish performance, unmatched style and looks that could kill. Unsurprisingly, Shelby American is set to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of this legendary car with a limited run of 50 special-edition Cobras. These special roadsters will make their official debut on January 13, 2015 at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, but Shelby chose to reveal the car ahead of its debut.

The Shelby Cobra is likely one of the most iconic American sports cars, so it is immediately recognizable by even the most casual of gearheads. This special model will be available in either an aluminum or fiberglass body, and will be available in two colors: brushed aluminum with or without brushed racing stripes (aluminum-bodied cars only), or a striking Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes. Indicating this car’s limited-edition status are 50th Anniversary Billet badges on the front, rear and sides, while a set of 15-inch Shelby-spec reproduction wheels round out the classic appearance of this powerful legend.

On the inside, the 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra 427 features black carpeting and black vinyl seats as standard. Buyers can opt for a set of high-end leather seats if they so desire. The anniversary badges make their way inside the cabin too, as you’ll find them on the steering wheel and floor mats.

Under the skin of this mighty sports car lies an period-correct independent suspension, but the brakes are of the modern disc variety with dual-piston calipers squeezing 11.4-inch rotors on the front and rear Unfortunately, Shelby does not offer the anniversary car with a drivetrain, but it does come with a 23-gallon fuel tank to feed whatever massive V-8 you choose to drop under its hood.

The 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra 427 will be limited to only 50 units and Shelby American has reserved a block of serial numbers ranging from CSX4550 to CSX4599 to accommodate these units. Additionally, each unit will come with a 1965 manufacturer statement of origin (MSO), which means not only is it legally a 1965 model, but it also means that it can remain untitled in certain states, thereby increasing its value over time.

Buyers can snag the 50th Anniversary Shelby Cobra 427 for $119,995 in fiberglass or $179,995 with an aluminum body. What’s more, each unit will be listed in the Shelby Registry alongside the original 343 models built in the 1960s, making this quite literally an “instant classic.”
