If you are BMW fan, or just really like the 1 Series, listen up. New rumors are emerging about the smallest Bimmer, which will see a redesign for the 2018 model year. Already, sources like Auto Express are claiming that the 1 Series will come on a front-wheel drive platform called UKL1, which hardcore BMW fans know is what is found on the Mini Cooper and 2 Series Active Tourer. The rumors also state that the car will be available as a sedan as well as in three- and five-door hatchback configurations.

Anyone who likes the compact dimensions of the current 1 Series will not be pleased to know that rumors say the next generation will feature a longer wheelbase and larger interior. While the model will grow in size, its weight reportedly will be kept in check through the use of weight-saving materials like aluminum. Considering that BMW has actively been using aluminum and other materials to cut weight on different models, improving performance and fuel economy, there is likely at least some truth in the rumor.

The rumors continue with speculation about the engines available in the 2018 1 Series. Most seem to agree that both three- and four-cylinder models will likely be available. Another rumor is that an M1 model will come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that puts out 360 bhp and provides plenty of thrills via an all-wheel drive system.

This is likely not the kind of news Bimmer performance fans want to hear. The 1 Series has been a hit with many enthusiasts since it more closely mimics the small, lightweight and nimble models that defined BMW as a creator of practical performance machines. Many BMW purists also scoff at any model that comes with front-wheel drive since they consider the only true BMWs to be those with a rear-wheel drive setup (sorry, X5 fans). If the rumors are true, the new configuration would likely help BMW offer more economical versions of the 1 Series, drawing in a new set of owners that might have purchased an Acura or Buick.
