Mercedes-Benz revealed more-rugged versions of the G-Class SUV in the form of multiple concept vehicles. Then, after clamoring from fans of the utilitarian-looking G-Class, Mercedes gave in and announced there will be a production version dubbed the G550 4×4². Today, we have all of the official details on its arrival in the U.S.

The last super-rugged G-Class, the 6×6 model, was not available in the U.S., but this time around, we get a taste of this posh SUV that’s not shy about playing in the mud. This beast will hit the trails with a G-Classes already-rugged ladder-style frame but it’ll gain a special set of dual springs and adjustable damper struts for maximum suspension travel. There is also a pair of stabilizer bars to help keep its manners on the road.

Sitting under this rig are portal axles that allow the axle’s input shaft and the center of the wheel to be at vastly different heights without binding. These axles also afford the G550 4×4² a 9-inch-wider track up front, and a 10-inch-wider track out back.

All summed up, the G550 4×4² has a max approach angle of 51.6 degrees (21.6-degree improvement), a 43.8-degree max departure angle (13.8-degree improvement), a 47.4-degree breakover angle (23.4-degree improvement), 17.2 inches of ground clearance (7.9-inch improvement), and a 39.4-inch fording depth (15.8-inch improvement).

Powering the 2017 G550 4×4² is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 that cranks out 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. The engine mates to a seven-speed auto transmission that delivers power to all four wheels. The four-wheel-drive system is permanent and set at a 50:50 distribution with three locking differentials and a low-range gear for optimal control and traction.

As with all G-Class models, the G550 4×4² may be rugged on the outside, but its cabin is quite upscale. This model shows its class with high-end standard goodies like an 8-inch COMAND infotainment system and navigation as standard.

Mercedes expects to have the 2017 G550 4×4² in U.S. showrooms in the beginning of 2017. Pricing details will be available at a later date.
