According to multiple reports, a source within Ford has leaked that the new GT supercar will be an ultra-rare vehicle. If this unnamed informant is correct, only 100 cars will be made available in the United States during the first production year, with a mere 100 extra to be split up among the rest of the world.

Before you start feeling down, keep in mind that very few people will be able to even afford the new Ford GT. The company is pushing prices well above what the last GT went for, even when accounting for inflation and other factors, with a price tag that supposedly will be well north of $400,000.

AutoBlog reached out to Ford and heard back that production will be limited to 250 units per year, not 200. The automaker refused to comment on how those vehicles would be distributed throughout the world.

No matter how few are going to be built, the Ford GT is looking to become yet another toy of the one percent of the population, the same people who might also own a La Ferrari and Porsche 918 Spyder.

Speaking of Ferrari, Ford seems to be taking a page out of the Italian automaker’s guide to snobbery by requiring potential buyers of the GT to fill out an application to even be considered for one of the 100 ownership opportunities. One can only imagine what sorts of questions would be on that application, which obviously will be used to make the GT seem more exclusive and special. Of course, the extremely limited numbers are also being used to make the supercar all that more desirable.

Quite a bit of mystery still surrounds the new Ford GT. Even though the car is supposed to start shipping in about twelve months’ time, Ford hasn’t released any official specs. Likely the supercar is still being tweaked, so we’ll continue to wait for solid figures.
