According to a report from Auto Express, Alfa Romeo is looking into reviving the 6C nameplate — one that last saw use in 1954 on a race car — to create a model to compete with the popular Jag F-Type. According to the report, Alfa Romeo will borrow the platform — essentially a shortened version of the Ghibli’s underpinnings — of the upcoming Maserati Alfieri to create its sporty coupe and convertible.

For those of you who missed it, the Alfieri was a concept car that first saw life at the Geneva Auto Show in 2014 and earned a slot in Maserati’s production lineup after rave reviews. The Alfieri is expected to start rolling into dealers in 2016 looking pretty similar to the concept we all saw in Geneva.

The report goes on to elaborate that the 6C will come fitted with the twin-turbo, 3.0-liter V-6 from the Ghibli, and that we can expect output between 480 and 520 ponies. Given the popularity of the F-Type, and all of the recent rumors of all-wheel drive and a manual transmission for the Jag, the Alfa 6C will have a whole lot of catching up to do.

For reference, the F-Type Roadster comes in three guises, including its base model with a 340-horspower V-6, the F-Type S with a 380-horsepower V-6 and the F-Type V8 S with a 495-horsepower V-8. The F-Type Coupe features the same two lower trims as the Roadster, but its top trim is the F-Type R Coupe, which features a 550-horsepower V-8. There is also a new F-Type Project 7 that comes with a 575-horsepower version of the supercharged V-8.

At the very least, I have to give Alfa Romeo credit for trying to brings its brand to the forefront with the all-new 4C and the upcoming 6C. Only time will tell if these two models will take off.
