Porsche Working on Lighter, Thriftier Panamera
The Porsche Panamera has been a necessary evil for fans of the brand, as it goes against just about everything the company stands for. It is big, heavy, and not the most agile of vehicles though it is pretty nimble for its size. The model’s second generation is soon to roll out, and Porsche plans to bring the big sedan closer to the brand’s roots.
It plans to achieve this by using Volkswagen’s new MSB platform, which it will share with models from Bentley, Bugatti, and Lamborghini. This new platform will help the Panamera by shedding a few pounds of heft, making it more nimble and fuel efficient in the process.
In addition to this new platform, Automotive News claims that Porsche will release a shooting brake version of the Panamera. This body style will give it more of a station wagon look that caters to the European market’s preference of wagons over crossovers.
Porsche is hopeful that these changes will lure buyers back into showrooms as things are looking grim as of late. The Panamera’s sales crashed last year when it saw a sales decline of 17,207 units (31 percent), making it the worst-selling model of the entire lineup in 2015.
The rest of the changes surrounding the next-gen Panamera remain under lock and key, but we don’t have to wait long because it will make its debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show on September 29th. We’ll bring you all of the latest on the redesigned Porsche sedan, so keep it locked here for the latest.
