The Porsche 911 has lost its way… sort of. In years past, it has been a driver’s car with very few nannies and electronic gizmos making its drivers seem better than they really are. In recent years, however, the nannies have gone into hyperdrive throughout the entire auto industry, and Porsche threw fans into a frenzy when it announced that the 911 GT3 would only be available with the PDK transmission.

Well, it looks like the German sports car manufacturer has taken note of the flack that has been tossed at it, and realized that there are still folks out there who prefer a slightly slower car that it more connected with the driver, as reports indicate there is a new, driver-focused 911 R on the way.

The 911 R, as reported by Road and Track, will carry a 911 GT3 heart, which means it’ll have a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine that produces 475 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque. The big change in the powertrain is the nixing of the PDK in favor of a manual gearbox.

In addition to having a do-it-yourself gearbox, the 911 R will also have skinnier rubber, no rear spoiler, and it’ll be lighter than the GT3. All of this will add up to one hell of a 911 that will challenge even the best of drivers. If Porsche actually follows through with this plan, I will have to tip my hat to the bean counters for letting a for-the-fans model like this come out.

Now for the bad part of this report… According to Road and Track, Porsche will build just 600 examples of the 911 R and they are already sold out. These cars were reportedly sold via Porsche’s “preferred program,” which is a select group of buyers who either own a 918 or multiple Porsche models.

Stay tuned for more details, as we should see this model hit the show circuit soon.
