While Porsche fans are enamored with the recent news of the Cayman GTS, which is officially the most powerful version of the popular coupe, some industry experts have obtained information that the German automaker is working on an even more potent Cayman GT4. Current speculation is that the new, even more performance-oriented version of the Cayman will make its debut sometime in the next three years or so.

Of course, with the greater engine output and overall better performance, the GT4 will also cost more. Industry experts also for the most part agree that pricing will likely be on par with the GT3, which carries a price tag of $125,000. Rumors also state that the GT4 will feature a fair amount of equipment from the GT3, including the modified PDK.

The one big mystery is what engine will power the GT4. Apparently, Porsche engineers are waiting to see how things play out at the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance race. If the experimental four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain in the 919 Hybrid Le Mans car performs well on the track, it likely will be adapted for the Cayman. In the even there are some hangups, Porsche likely will install a flat-six engine with a hybrid assist system.

The Boxster is not going to be left out in the cold while the Cayman undergoes the mad scientist treatment. Porsche is planning to create a high-performance version of the roadster, supposedly calling it the RS Spyder.

For those who are really inpatient and like to buy expensive cars all the time, there are the GTS versions of the Boxster and Cayman to tide them over in the meantime. Both come with a 3.4-liter engine, with the one in the Boxster delivering 330 horsepower and the one in the Cayman pushing out 340 horsepower. Those extra ten horsepower makes the Cayman a tenth of a second quicker when accelerating from 0 to 60 mph.
