Porsche CEO Shoots Down Autonomous Vehicle Talk

Nobody should buy a 911 or Cayman and let the car have all the fun of driving. Thankfully Porsche CEO Dr. Oliver Blume recognizes this fact. Even though some lazy individuals would love to have the image of owning a Porsche without the hassle of turning the wheel and actuating the pedals, the company will not be offering autonomous drive for a long time, if ever.

During an interview with German newspaper Westfalen-Blatt, Blume denounced such automotive blasphemy. He quipped, “an iPhone belongs in your pocket, not on the road.”

So Porsche won’t be getting all cozy with Apple, Google or any other big tech giant anytime soon. That goes against the trend in the automotive industry, at least on the surface. If you take a closer look, other brands that are focused on performance across the board are also eschewing alliances with Silicon Valley and the like, since their customers already feel that too many electronic nannies get in the way of enjoying the vehicles. For brands with broad offerings, such as Chevy, BMW or Toyota, that certainly isn’t the case. Instead, they’re becoming increasingly concerned with offering new entertainment options for drivers who will no longer be driving.

Whatever you do, don’t call Porsche a company of technophobes. It has a history of pushing past boundaries in the automotive industry, like with the 918 and the 959. Porsche has plans to create gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid versions of all its vehicles, including the venerable 911.

In addition, Porsche is jumping into the market with an all-electric model, called the Mission E. To create the new vehicle, the German automaker is pouring about $1.1 billion into a new product setup. Even though it will boast an astounding 600-plus horsepower and a range that will rival the Model S, don’t expect it to feature anything like Tesla’s Autopilot. Instead, drivers will have to rely on the old fashioned way of getting around: paying attention.
