As a racer of a relatively new car—2014 Focus ST—that still has a warranty on it, I fear that any damages done on the track will not be covered by the warranty. I am sure plenty of racers have the same anxiety I do when they arrive for their track day, but it is one of the risks we are willing to take to be able to enjoy our cars to their fullest. Now the Camaro’s chief engineer, Al Oppenheiser, told Motor Authority that GM will honor the Camaro’s factory warranty, even if the damage is due to you racing it on the track.

There are a few caveats, of course, as GM will only cover SS or higher trim levels and the car may not be modified. Regardless of these qualifiers, the fact that GM is confident enough to cover the Camaro on the track proves that the rigorous on-track testing the automaker does with its sports car must not have turned up any issues.

Motor Authority also reached out to Ford and Dodge to find out their on-track policies. The site learned that all Mustangs are covered for “test and tune” but not for competition and the Challenger’s warranty isn’t voided by racing it, but it will evaluate any damages sustained during the race on a case-by-case basis.
