Over Half of Volkswagen US Sales Are SUVs

February sales figures are already in, and Volkswagen is reporting something Americans shouldn’t be the least bit surprised about: over half of the brand’s sales were SUVs! This concept seemed to elude VW management for the longest time, but it seems to be finally catching on that people in North America like SUVs, for whatever range of reasons.

The Touareg was never a successful SUV in the States. It was expensive, had a weird name, and cost too much. Yes, I said that twice, for emphasis. The Atlas has been a shift in the right direction. It’s larger, has three rows (which some people apparently will die without), and most importantly is more affordable. Oh, and everyone can pronounce the name.

It’s the Tiguan that led the way to sales success in February, racking up 7,486 sales. The Atlas, which is probably still building up awareness for everyone who doesn’t read automotive news sites like this one, still captured 4,766 sales, which is great.

Volkswagen is seeing the fruits of the Atlas quickly while it’s working on more SUVs for this market. Some will be electrified, and that should deepen the brand’s appeal to at least a few more consumers. After years and years of VW stubbornly refusing to understand what Americans want, it’s finally getting it.
