Nissan And Tesla In A Lithium-Ion Battery Brawl

While everyone’s wowed by the Tesla Model 3 reveal, it’s obvious the Gigafactory wasn’t nearly as impressive. That huge facility in the middle of the Nevada desert is going to be important in a new battle against Nissan.

It’s all about lithium-ion batteries. The tech has made electric cars more practical. While Tesla has been pushing range to incredible levels, Nissan is about to put the smack down on the California automaker. At least Nissan says it will.

Most people don’t know that Nissan has been working on lithium-ion batteries since 1992. Seeing Tesla ride in and take all the credit is infuriating for Nissan engineers.

As Tesla basks in the glory of making EVs that can go about 300 miles on a charge, Nissan is cooking up tech that would push range to about 370 miles. That’s a huge improvement over the current Leaf. Nissan thinks that would make waves of people ditch their gasoline cars and buy electrics instead.

All of this was revealed by Nissan itself, not the auto industry rumor mill, through a newsletter in Japanese, called EVolution 2016. Inside EVs was gracious enough to translate it.

In the publication, Nissan brags quite a bit about its history with lithium-ions. It takes shots at Tesla, without naming the American automaker, saying Nissan EVs have never had an accident because of battery problems. There’s no doubt this is a direct reference to the Supercharger fire in Norway, or the other “spontaneous” Model S combustions.
