Mitsubishi Has a New SUV Coming in Geneva — Is it for the U.S.?
Mitsubishi is primed to add an all-new crossover to its lineup at the Geneva Motor Show, but will it help bolster a struggling U.S. lineup?
Unfortunately, we won’t know if this will be a U.S.-spec model until at least the start of the Geneva show on March 7, 2017. What we do have in our hands is a teaser image and a few minor details about this new crossover.
According to the press release, this will be a compact crossover, and it will join the existing lineup. So those of you thinking this may be a new Outlander Sport, your wrong. Mitsubishi claims this new people mover will boast a bolder design that includes a wedge-shaped belt line, a “forceful” character line on the side, a more steeply raked rear window for a coupe-like look, a long wheelbase with short rear overhangs, and more flared front and rear fenders.
Looking at the image, I see a sportier roofline that slowly tapers down toward the rear, the new Mitsu family grille and what look to be taillights that run up the D-pillars.
While this dark image seems to show a new way of designing vehicles for Mitsubishi – maybe its new majority owner, Nissan, is rubbing off on it – I will curb my excitement for now.
Though it’s pure speculation, I believe this will be a U.S.-spec model slated right between the Outlander Sport and the larger Outlander. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Mitsubishi experiment with some new powerplants, maybe even a turbo, to inject some much-needed oomph into its crossover lineup. Maybe this is a start of a new beginning for the once-popular brand.
Let us know what you think this new model has in store in the comments. Stay tuned for updates.
