Well, the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show is upon us and Mercedes-Benz has officially revealed the strangely shaped, auto-driving concept car that it’s been teasing as of late. Dubbed the F 015 Luxury in Motion, this concept car is straight from a science-fiction movie from every aspect. The most striking part is, of course, its outrageous outward appearance.

The F 015 Luxury in Motion is a rather odd-looking concept that clearly has no place on today’s roads. It’s hard to know where to start with this concept, but the most striking is its unique, monolithic construction made from a mixture of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics, aluminum and high-strength steels, which results in a seamless look that is unattainable by today’s assembly standards. Its rather oddly proportions of 5,220 mm (205.5 inches) long, 2,018 mm (79.45 inches) wide and 1,524 mm (60 inches tall) give it a striking appearance on the road, and its 3,610-mm (142.1-inch) wheelbase with short overhangs shows that this concept is designed to maximize interior space and comfort. Rounding out the odd exterior features are LED lights on the front and rear that glow white when the car is being driven manually or blue when it is in autonomous mode.

Enhancing the oddness of this autonomous rig are its saloon-style doors that lack a B-pillar, providing easy access to the spacious cabin, and the massive 26-inch wheels.

The cabin is the obvious focus of the F 015 Luxury in Motion concept. This is where the passengers are treated to a lounge-like atmosphere with warm, organic materials, open-pore wood, soft Nappa leather, and various metal and glass surfaces. As is becoming the norm with autonomous concepts, the seating system is flexible, as the front seats spin around for a face-to-face seating arrangement when in autonomous mode. When the car is in manual mode, the seats, of course, face forward and the steering wheel extends out from the dash.

As for propulsion, the F 015 Luxury in Motion concept uses an electric motor with fuel cell technology, but there are no specifics given in terms out power output or range. Mercedes does mention that the drivetrain is based upon the F-Cell Plug-In Hybrid system seen in the F 125 research vehicle first launched in 2011.

According to the press release from Mercedes-Benz, this concept isn’t simply a look into the potential future. Instead, Mercedes is actually using this vehicle as a springboard to the future and we should see much of its technology as we move forward. That said, there are no actual production plans for the F 015 Luxury in Motion concept.
