Mazda CX-4 Shows Minimal Changes from Concept to Production in Teaser Images
When Mazda revealed the Koeru concept, there was a little love and a little hate for it. I loved the newest tweak to the Kodo design, but I couldn’t stand the fact that it was a crossover coupe. Fast-forward to 2016, and we are about to see this concept in production form—sloped rear hatch and all—as the CX-4 is set to debut at the Beijing Auto Show. Today, ahead of its April 29th debut, Mazda’s Chinese press site has released a handful of teaser images that show off the concept-to-production looks of the CX-4.
>According to reports, the CX-4 will essentially be a coupe-ized version of the brand’s popular CX-5. While I find these types of vehicles pointless, they do sell well and deliver capital that automakers need to build more fun stuff—a necessary evil, so to speak. In the main teaser image (above) the sleek rear hatch is on full display, and in the one below, you can see how this look is a serious detriment to cargo capacity.
The interior teasers show off a very Mazda interior with plenty of angles to please the eye, a sporty, three-post steering wheel, a heads-up display, and a standalone, tablet-like infotainment screen.
Given the CX-4 is based on the CX-5, look for it to carry all the same powerplants as its China-spec sibling. This would give it a 2.2-liter turbo-diesel engine, and two gasoline engine in the 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G units. Of course, all-wheel drive will be available as an option to its standard front-wheel drive.
There are no plans, yet, to release the CX-4 in the U.S., but we should learn more about that potential during its debut in Beijing.
