Look Out America, the Chinese Cars are Coming

Look around your house. Grab a few random objects, and I bet that at least one of them has a “Made in China” logo on it somewhere. China has infiltrated the U.S. in nearly every major product line, including electronics, jewelry, clothing, and even tires. Despite this influx of Chinese products, automobiles remain one segment that the Asian country has yet to crack in America.

According to a report from Reuters, this may not hold true for much longer, as Geely is working on finding a way into the U.S.

Geely, which currently owns Volvo, is teaming up with the Swedish automaker to develop a new platform named Compact Modular Architecture. This CMA will not only underpin several Volvo models, but it will also sit beneath a small Geely SUV. One person with knowledge of Geely’s operations told Reuters, “With the CMA car, [Geely’s chairman] wants to tell the world we’re ready for the big time. We’re ready to break into Europe and the U.S.”

The new Geely SUV will start in Europe as an alternative-fuel vehicle (hybrid or EV) sold in several flagship stores. This will help prove that the company is not just some cheap Chinese knockoff brand. Following success in Europe, Geely then has its eyes set on the U.S., according to the report.

According to one source, Geely hopes to work with Volvo to build a plant in the U.S. where the two can manufacture cars side by side. Using an established brand like Volvo would be a great way to get Americans to accept the Chinese brand. However, Volvo hasn’t always been open to Geely’s input, and it may push back when approached with this proposition.

For now, Chinese automakers are still on the outside looking into America, but we may soon see Geely make its way over here. Honestly, I have been in a few Geely cars when I was overseas, and they are actually decent cars for the price, but I am not too sure how accepting American buyers will be to them.
