Chinese car site Autohome just leaked information about the upcoming three-row Volkswagen crossover. The vehicle’s a big deal, because VW has had zero presence in that section of the market, where profit margins are big and competition is fierce.

The most curious part of the report is the claim that this new Volkswagen will have a lot in common with the Audi Q7. The two vehicles supposedly will be almost identical in their footprint. That’s great news, because the Q7 is an excellent vehicle and fairly spacious.

Supposedly, Volkswagen is aiming for a $30,000 starting price point. That would put the vehicle on equal ground as the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander and Chevy Traverse. The site also had info about the powertrain, but it applies to the Chinese market and not here. It’s likely the North American version will have a V-6 engine and front-wheel-drive, with 4Motion optional. Expect to see a plug-in four-cylinder later.

If Autohome is correct, the final version of the car will look a lot like the Crossblue design study. It got everyone talking when revealed for the 2013 Detroit Auto Show, so that would be a wise move.
