Lawsuit: GM Cheating Emissions Like VW

Ever since Volkswagen got nailed for cheating on diesel emissions, plenty of people have been waiting for another automaker to get caught in a similar cheat. The latest potential comes via a lawsuit against GM.

According to an Autoblog report, law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro alleges GM is using software cheats for the Chevy Cruze Diesel. Of course, plenty of average Americans are completely shocked to learn that a diesel version of the Cruze exists.

If this lawsuit goes anywhere, it could actually end up boosting Cruze Diesel sales, that’s how little exposure the car’s gotten since it launched a few years ago. Right now, the goal of the suit is to give vehicle owners the $2,000 premium they paid back, plus damages.

GM isn’t exactly going to roll over on this one. It says the accusation that it used cheat software is “baseless.” In fact, the company claims that it used legit methods to make the 2.0-liter diesel engine more emissions friendly just so it could be used in the United States without problems.

Did GM cheat? There probably won’t be an answer to that question for a while. Even if it did, it won’t make nearly that same splash as the VW Dieselgate scandal.
