Land Rover to Dip its Wheels in the Idiocy That is the Crossover Coupe Segment

Over the weekend, I plopped down with my wife and watch Idiocracy for about the 50th time, and I cannot help but think the automakers are going through the same dumbing-down phase that all of Earth underwent in the flick. Case in point is the sudden obsession with the crossover coupe. First came BMW, the Mercedes-Benz, and now, Land Rover is considering jumping into this ring of near-useless rigs.

According to the folks at Autocar, Land Rover’s X6 copycat will reportedly be dubbed the Range Rover Coupe—the creativity of the name is befitting of a model this original—but its working titles are the L560 and the Evoque Plus. According to the report, this rig will sit between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.

This crossover coupe will have its sights set on the X4, as it will be roughly the size of the smaller Bimmer SAV. It will feature a long hood, short overhangs, and a 2+2 cabin setup. Add to these the fact that the sloped roof will eat up much of its potential cargo room, and you see why I consider these among some of the least useful slabs of metal patrolling the roads today.

Powertrain details are totally unknown at this point, but Autocar claims it will boast anything from a full-electric propulsion system to a snarling V-8 with upward of 525 horsepower at its disposal.

There is no official word from Land Rover regarding this model, but with Mercedes and BMW going this route, it is only a matter of time before Land Rover has to tag along.
