Jaguar Shows Everyone How To Design A Great-Looking EV
Some automakers seem to think electric vehicles must look weird. Jaguar has broken that trend with the I-Pace Concept, and it’s a breath of fresh air.
Sure, the Tesla Model S isn’t ugly, but it lacks a certain dramatic flair. If this concept SUV keeps essentially the same looks when it goes to production, Jaguar shouldn’t have too much trouble selling literally boatloads of them.
Also great about the I-Pace Concept is that Jaguar calls it a “sports car.” Acceleration from 0 to 60 should take about four seconds. Handling’s supposed to be razor-sharp, partly thanks to all-wheel drive. Sure, it’ll shrink your carbon footprint. But you’ll look great and have fun, too. That’s definitely a win-win-win.
There’s a cab-forward design, making the front end look like it belongs to a mid-engined car. Because the powertrain is housed in the chassis, there’s also plenty of backseat and cargo space. Just as amazing, Jaguar claims the average driver would only have to charge the I-Pace once a week. That’s probably a good thing, because getting an 80-percent charge takes an hour and a half, which is longer than Teslas and some other options hitting the market.
As a true British car, this concept has a sumptuous interior. There’s also plenty of technology, with two touchscreens, a completely digital gauge cluster and capacitive switches on the steering wheel.
We should see the production version of the Jaguar I-Pace before too long, because it’s scheduled to hit showrooms in 2018.
