Jaguar Land Rover Taking On Chinese Copycats

They say that emulation is the greatest form of flattery, but Jaguar Land Rover doesn’t seem to see it that way. The British company is reportedly in the process of suing Jiangling Motor, the Chinese automaker that famously ripped off the Evoque’s design for the Land Wind X7 SUV, according to a report form Reuters.

If you follow Chinese automotive news at all, you already know that cribbing designs from other companies is common there. Many Chinese feel that these copycat vehicles are no big deal. Obviously Jaguar Land Rover isn’t amused.

Before, Jiangling Motor was going to sell the X7 only in China. The report said that the company changed course and was making plans to have the SUV shipped to Brazil. That apparently triggered the lawsuit. Thanks to the ongoing suit, the Chinese SUV has to remain inside the country until the whole dispute is cleared up.

This will be interesting, considering no other foreign automaker has sued a Chinese company for copying designs, but plenty could. Will this open the floodgates?

The general sentiment in China about this kind of a move is that the non-Chinese brand is acting like a bully while muscling around the local favorite. That could spell trouble for Jaguar Land Rover, because the Chinese market is huge and critical for the automaker’s future success.
