The bad news keeps rolling in for the Volkswagen Group and its various brands. According to a recent report from Reuters, Italian finance police raided Lamborghini’s headquarters in Bologna. The story cites an anonymous source on the inside of the investigation, saying the whole thing is an effort to find evidence of possible commercial fraud on the part of Volkswagen, not Lamborghini.

At the same time, police conducted a search of Volkswagen’s Italian headquarters, presumably for the same reason. The noose seems to be tightening around the German automaker’s neck as more governments scrutinize its every action.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also just launched an official investigation of Volkswagen. It centers around the company’s claims about the various “clean diesel” models, which as everyone knows now were outfitted with devices that cheat on emissions tests. The FTC is working with the EPA and Justice Department, according to Bloomberg, both of which are conducting their own formal investigations at the moment.

The FTC investigation might have been triggered by Senator Bill Nelson, who is a Democrat from the state of Florida. He petitioned the head of the FTC last month to launch a probe and force VW’s hand on running a marketing push to let consumers know everything about the scandal, says Bloomberg. At this point it seems impossible that no VW TDI owner knows about the deceptive practices of the automaker, but apparently Senator Nelson feels differently or just wants Volkswagen to eat more crow.

The future of Volkswagen right now doesn’t look bright at all, to state the obvious. At last count, the company has been served with over 280 class-action suits, and various top-level executives who knew about the emissions scandal for some time might still face criminal and civil charges.

It’s entirely possible that the FTC could force Volkswagen to refund money to TDI owners, something that the organization has done to companies in the past.
