There have been rumors regarding an electrified version of the 911, and today, a new report from Autocar shows that this may be closer to a reality than we initially thought. According to the report, we could see at least a hybrid version of the 911 by 2018, and maybe even more electrification by 2020.

This report is based on a test mule that Autocar spotted, and there were even more details shared by a few company execs.

According to an interview with Porsche 911 product line director, Erhard Mössle, the automaker “needs an answer” to the Tesla Model S. He also mentioned that the sports car manufacturer needs to meet all the stringent CO2 regulations in 2020, and that the company is closing in on meeting these while meeting its goals for charging speed and driving range.

Also touched upon was the possibility of an all-electric 911 to give the Audi R8 e-tron something to think about. While Mössle admitted that Porsche is considering a model like this, he stressed that there is no guarantee that it’ll ever be a production model.

Mössle also got into the styling of the next-gen 911, which is due out around the end of 2018, according to historical lifespans of 911 generations. As is typical with the 911, the next-gen model will be an evolution of the current styling instead of a revolutionary design. It will also ride on the same MMB platform as the current 991-generation 911.

While hearing from an executive definitely adds so legitimacy to this report, I am still skeptical that Porsche will go the hybrid or electric route with the 911. Porsche purists are already up in arms over the recent addition of the small Macan crossover, and they have long loathed the Cayenne and Panamera, so I could only imagine what a hybrid 911 would cause these traditionalists to do.

Stay tuned for more details, as we should start learning more about this model given the 2018 date is accurate.
