Honda Shocks And Awes With The Civic Concept
The Honda as we all know it seems to be going through a dramatic transformation, which thankfully is pulling the company out of the mediocrity it’s been mired in for years. At least, that’s what’s being signaled by the Civic Concept, which was unveiled at the New York International Auto Show. The concept blew everyone away, and even better it previews what we’ll all be seeing when the all-new 10th-generation Civic hit dealerships in the fall.
Every market around the world will be getting the same version of the Civic lineup, which includes the sedan, coupe, Si and hatchback forms of the car. Honda also dropped a bombshell by confirming that the Civic Type R will be coming to America, which is a big deal for enthusiasts and fans of the brand. That news alone could help Honda become a favorite among performance enthusiasts in the U.S. again, a group that lately has felt that the brand has ignored it.
As anyone can see, the Civic Concept is much edgier than the current 9th generation of the car. According to Honda, the looks will be backed up by improved performance. The wheelbase is longer, the stance is wider and the front overhang is shorter for a much more athletic look than before. A “Flying H” grille punctuates the nose, combining with big lower air intakes for a more aggressive edge.
Honda has revealed the engine that will be used for the new Civic lineup, a 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo that can be paired with a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT. Official powertrain specs aren’t available, but it’s supposed to make for fun driving as well as great fuel economy.
Even though the 2016 Honda Civic will be a global vehicle, leading the development process was the company’s North American R&D team, with the design portion being driven by the Los Angeles design studio. Production of the coupe and sedan versions of the car will happen in North America, while the hatchbacks will be made in the UK.
