Honda Has Created An 11-Speed Triple-Clutch Tranny

Not too long ago, Honda was making mediocre cars even your mom was embarrassed to drive to get groceries. Today, the company seems to be turning over a leaf, or at least getting its mojo back. The latest piece of evidence is a recently-filed patent for an 11-speed triple-clutch transmission.

That’s not a typo: there will be three clutches in the tranny. Autoguide originally unearthed this filing in Japan, along with the explanation of how the third clutch will be used. Basically, the reduction in torque experienced with a dual-clutch setup would be eliminated. It could lead to quicker gear changes, plus dramatically improved fuel economy.

This news is perfect for a company which based its whole reputation on building lightweight, efficient and fun cars. Mistakes like the CR-Z make enthusiasts and environmentalists wonder if Honda is done for, but the new Civic, CR-V makeover and NSX show you might not want to could the company out yet. This 11-speed triple-clutch transmission could be used in any number of Hondas, or throughout the model lineup, giving people a reason to flock to the brand in waves.

Of course, this patent filing could go nowhere. We’ll see. At a time when Honda is a prime acquisition target for other automakers, it needs a big win.
