GM Has Won All Ignition Switch Lawsuits So Far
Whether you think GM has really turned over a new leaf or not, the company doesn’t seem to be at risk of paying out big in its ignition switch lawsuits. Out of three important court cases that have been tried so far, GM has won all of them.
Each of the lawsuits were set up to settle dozens of others, so these victories are a big deal. In one particular case, members of the jury told the AP they wanted to side with one person suing General Motors, but couldn’t bring themselves to because there simply wasn’t enough evidence.
In case you don’t recall, GM did settle over 1,300 injury and death cases attached to the ignition switch fault just last fall. The automaker forked over $300 million for that, but some people decided that wouldn’t satisfy them. In hindsight, that probably wasn’t the best decision, because so far it seems GM will be able to roll through the three remaining bellwether lawsuits without damage.
Most consumers seem to have forgotten about the whole ignition switch controversy. GM sales have been quite healthy recently.
